The Cosmic Turntable is an animation inspired by the earth's five previous mass extinctions , from the late Ordovician extinction to the Cretaceous extinction in addition to the predicted mass extinction of our own Anthropocene period.
The animation is created using a combination of techniques, but most prominently stop motion claymation and rotoscoped frame-by-frame animation. The technique is derived from the theme, inspired by the role of clay in many creation myths. The constant turning of the ceramic turntable is inspired by the cyclical history of the earth.
The Cosmic Turntable is a part of JAM (just a minute), an annual workshop at The University of Bergen that involves both the Department of Music, the Department of Design and the Department of Art. JAM is a practical workshop that includes both teachers and students from all departments in a multidisciplinary animation project.
