“Burned” is a book written and illustrated by me during my stay as an exchange student in Iceland. It is based on the true events of the evacuation of northern Norway during the second world war, where the scorched earth tactic was used by the Germans. The story in the book does not portray one specific event but has a goal of portraying the feeling of despair, panic, and sorrow of being forcefully evacuated.
Leading up to this I talked to my grandfather, who lived through this event. The main character in the story is based on his mother who fled her home with two young children.
The illustrations are completely done by hand using ink and gouache. I experimented with a few different styles and looks, but in the end, I chose these mediums to create more dramatic visuals.
